It just seems like that's a rarity these days though. I see maybe 3 or 4 friends who have remained dedicated LJ users while the rest seem to have gone on about their business elsewhere. Plus at least this way I have *some* control of the ups and downs of the site where LJ is something of a crap-shoot ;)

Oh, sure, I just get back into using LJ again, and you're abandoning it altogether. THANKS FOR NUTHIN', TRAITOR.

(Honestly, as long as you write stuff, I don't actually care where you put it!)

As far as I know, the earlier the better on socializing. A puppy that spooks is not as worrisome as an adult dog, after all. (In my experience, adult dogs tend to react to an aggressive puppy with a patient or exasperated demeanor instead of a hostile one.) With kids, it's important to train the kid in advance - how do you keep from scaring a puppy, how do you handle a puppy that nips (don't tug away because that will feel like a game, tell it no in as deep a voice as you can manage, and tap or flick the top of its nose), etc. It's good practice for both the puppy and the kids.

However, if you have a friend who runs a dog training school, it's probably a good idea to consult with her on what she recommends.

It *is* a pretty potent force to be reckoned with isn't it? It's probably one of the many reasons we were unable to leave the shelter without taking her with us :)

This is Macha our female brindle-striped bundle of love of indeterminate origin.

I did not know about the paper training so that is really good to know. I had thought about doing so but it sounds like I should be very glad that we opted for frequent walks instead. We have a friend up here who runs a dog training school (she's a vet tech at MSPCA Angell and seems to really grok dogs) so we're probably going to bring her in to help us train Macha.

Is there a proper age to start socializing a puppy? I really want her OK with other dogs and small children, but she's still playful and mouthy. She's never bitten at all but she does open her mouth wide to lick and that might scare some kids. Is it a better idea to wait until she's got some training under her belt before we get her around kids?

Ah excellent...thank you for these :)

We're trying to stick with that though the hardest has been at night. We're crate training her and she whined heavily last night. I sat in bed and talked with Nora for awhile to let Macha know we were there but didn't specifically pay attention to her. This seemed to work well for the beginning of the night but Nora basically ended up spending the night next to her cage to keep her from whining. I'm not sure though if that counts as rewarding negative behavior or not though. I know my dad highly recommended the first book as well so I think I'll grab a copy of that off Amazon today. Thanks much.

Aww! Name? Gender?

Don't Shoot The Dog, as mentioned by muffyjo, is a wonderful book. I would also recommend The Invisible Leash, but it's apparently gone out of print a long time ago. Drat.

My mom trains dogs for a hobby, so I grew up with a whole fuzzy pack. I do have a few pointers. I suspect most of them won't be new but in case they are here goes....

- If you paper train a puppy, it will be very, very hard to un-paper train your puppy. If it's at all possible, taking your puppy outside very very often is much better.
- Obedience training is critical. There are some core commands (sit, stay, come, down, heel) that every dog needs to know for his own safety and the safety of others.
- It's important to make sure your puppy has positive experiences with other dogs and with children. Early, positive socialization will prevent your dog from being afraid of other dogs or children (and thus sharply reduce the chances of aggression.)
- Get a vet's opinion on how much you should be feeding your dog and how to tell if your dog is overweight. Overweight dogs are unhappy.

I hope this helps!
