RIP Robert Jordan

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend.

I’m sad both because he was a good writer, and because he never got to finish his series. I used to rag on the endless nature of the whole “Wheel of Time” series, but I still genuinely enjoyed the books. From his site it states: “It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain.”

To quote the author (and show my geek-love for the series), let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.

Oh wow! I actually find that really shocking. There’s some part of me that doesn’t believe that authors can die while a series is unfinished.

I tried and failed to get through the fifth book five times. I just couldn’t get past the huuuge block of text in the middle that’s essentially three women riding on the back of a wagon complaining about how they have no powers and how men are oafish and easily manipulated. But aside from that, I loved the series. It’s sad to see him go.

The series definitely wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was still enjoyable at times. I knew he was sick, but it still sucks. There’s also the rumor that his wife had actually been doing the writing, after the third book. If that’s so, there’s always a chance it might be finished.

I hate to sound like a horrible person (though I’m used to it at this point), but leeching every last penny from your rabid fanbase is some pretty cold shit to do, and I’m not the least bit sorry to hear about his passing. I’d given up any hope of him actually finishing the series with dignity. Prequel my ass.

If you actually hated sounding like a horrible person, I would think you would choose to stop doing so…

Anyway, I don’t think there was any malice aforethought on his part in regards to keeping the series running for so long. He wore an Aes Sedai ring and his friends referred to him as the Dragon. I see those alone as representative of an author who loved the characters (and world) he created very much. That’s my take on it at least.
